New kid on reggae block

REGGAE-dancehall artiste Kudakwashe Mukwekwerere, better known as Drey Drevis, is set to release his debut album, Bata Muchiuno.

The confident Drey Drevis said the project was a result of hard work in a highly competitive music environment.

Apart from the title track, the six-track debut has songs like Handimunyime, Usandibvunze, Party we are party, Bottle and Ndiwainire.

Drey is known for the singles Mabhebhi emuclub and Hakaka Jive which enjoyed airplay on Zifm’s Judgement Yard early this year.

Drey urged other upcoming artistes to stay focused so that the country’s music industry continues to flourish.

“Music is not something which comes on a silver platter and every artiste, renowned or upcoming should go all out in producing the best music they can. In my short walk in the music industry, I have come to realise that if one is to be recognised, they need to work extra hard,” he said.

The 21-year-old is also an acoustic guitarist with the Optsonic family, a seven-member band with a fusion of artistes from various music genres.

He, however, lamented the fact that Mutare has very few music promoters which makes it difficult for artistes to make it.

“We still have very few promoters and so it takes an extra mile if an upcoming artiste is to be known and appreciated. This is also a challenge because much of the talent goes without guidance and proper mentoring such that in most cases artistes produce sub-standard work,” he said.

Drey Drevis, who records with Optsonic Studios in Sakubva said he was already working on the album’s videos which would be released by year end.
