Elsewhere in Greater Harare, sungura music’s new kid on the block, Herbert Majeke, proved why he is the genre’s latest find when he impressed revellers at his two shows held at Emm Glo Bar and Restaurant and Kule’s Bar.
The gifted multi-instrumentalist, backed by his Takashinga Stars, played songs from his albums “Kugara Kunzwana”, “Afro Fusion” and “Makasa Adya Muchokochi”.
Songs like “Fiona” and “Mabasa Ana Mai” proved popular with fans who are frequenting Majeke’s shows especially those which he often holds at Emm Glo Bar and Restaurant along Harare Street where the artiste has become the de facto resident performer.
Majeke (27), who is a also a sound engineer with leading local music instruments dealer Hard Sound Pro-Audio, also thrilled revellers with renditions of songs by musicians Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo, Alick Macheso, Jonah Moyo and the late Tongai Moyo in a slot popular known among revellers as “Juke Box”.
In this segment, people request songs of their choice, which the artiste and his group then play.
Majeke’s fame has also spread even among Nigerians who frequent Emm Glo which is a pre-dominantly Nigerian joint which also serves Nigerian cuisine like pepe soup, ogbono and jolof rice, among others.
Majeke has worked with Baba Machanic Manyeruke’s group The Puritans, playing the guitar as well as keyboards.
He has also played for a number of groups like Mambokadzi and Agatha Murudzwa, among others.
