THE Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has invited prospective hemp-based complementary medicine producers and distributors to apply for licences.

In a circular dated July 18, 2022, and addressed to producers, manufacturers, importers, exporters and retail pharmacists, MCAZ acting director-general Mr Richard Rukwata said applications should satisfy requirements such as submission of product samples and inspection of the manufacturing site.

The requirements include “submission of an application for registration (dossier) in line the guideline for submission of application for complementary medicines”.

“Submission of product samples, submission of certificates of analysis from an accredited laboratory specifying the quantities of the active moieties of cannabidiols and any traces of tetrahydrocannabinol as part of the information in the dossier,” reads part of the circular.

Applicants are also required to clearly specify the indications, warnings and contraindications as part of the product information in line with the complementary medicines’ guideline.

MCAZ said any hemp-based CBD product applications that do not meet the criteria above may not be approved for distribution and will be confiscated.

And sellers may be prosecuted for selling unapproved complementary medicines.
