NEW: Lift sanctions now, small-scale miners say

DIFFICULTIES in receiving proceeds from mineral sales, especially experienced by parastatals such as the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe, underline the impact sanctions are having on Zimbabwe and, therefore, have to be unconditionally lifted for the country to realise its full potential, Zimbabwe Miners Federation president Ms Henrietta Rushwaya has said.

Every year, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states observe October 25 as Anti-Sanctions Day in solidarity with Zimbabwe.

“The Zimbabwe Miners Federation joins the SADC countries in calling on the international community to reconsider these sanctions, and to adopt a constructive approach taking into account efforts made by Government in terms of inclusive sustainable development,” she said.

“The sanctions have also adversely affected key agricultural and infrastructural development institutions and mining parastatals such as the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) and Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC).

“There have been instances of failure to receive proceeds from mineral sales, especially those associated with MMCZ.”

Some of the coercive measures, she said, have also adversely affected small-scale miners from receiving their proceeds from mining institutions.
