WOMEN’S football in Zimbabwe has been given a new lease of life following a cash injection into the top-flight league by football enthusiast Walter Magaya.
On Friday, the women’s soccer league will adopt the name Heart League when Magaya unveils a US$320 000 sponsorship deal expected to rescue women’s football from a perennial financial crisis.
Most teams in the Zimbabwe Women’s Soccer League are in a financial quandary, as they struggle to raise money for match officials.
The league’s teams also struggle to fulfill fixtures.
All this could soon be a thing of the past following Magaya’s intervention. Magaya owns Yadah Stars, a Premier Soccer League team.
“The hand-over of this donation shall happen on Friday with a glamorous dinner starting at Yadah Hotel. All respected people in the sports fraternity shall be present,” said a source.
Herentals Queens are the reigning champions and are representing Zimbabwe in the CAF Champions League.
The other teams that compete in the women’s top-flight league are Chapungu, Harare City, Faith Drive Academy, Conduit SA, Hope Academy, ZRP Harare Queens, Black Rhinos Queens, MSU Queens, Platinum Royals, Sheasham Queens, Correctional Queens, Black Mambas Queens and Maningi.
