TITLE aspirants Manica Diamonds shot into second position in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League championship race after edging fellow competitors Dynamos 1-0 in a match played at Gibbo Stadium this afternoon.
A curled Brian Chikwinya goal from just outside the box in the 12th minute settled the contest and consigned DeMbare (49 points) into third position, who now trail the diamond miners (50) by one point.
Chikwinya hit the target direct from a set piece, giving Prince Tafiremutsa in goals for Dynamos no chance.
Manica Diamonds hitman, Fortune Binzi had drawn a foul from midfielder Tanaka Shandirwa who upended him on the edge of the area, with Chikwinya converting the resultant free-kick.
Coach, Jairos Tapera’s men managed to repel the Glamour Boys’ attacks for the remainder of the match to hold on for the precious victory.
All the teams have now played 29 matches, with the Gem Boys seven points off the pace on log leaders, Ngezi Platinum Stars.
With five rounds of fixtures to conclude the 2023 campaign, the top six clubs in the title race are still fancying their chances of pipping the Mhondoro-based pacesetters to the crown.
