All is set for the 2022 Population and Housing Census in Masvingo, where a march was held in the central business district to mark the start of the programme, which officially begins on Wednesday evening.
A Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) procession spiced up by drummers and the ZCC Mbungo Brass Band marched around the city, drawing hordes of on-lookers despite the cold weather.
Zimstat Masvingo provincial spokesperson Mr Rodgers Irimayi believes the programme will proceed flawlessly as everything is in place.
“Tonight is a census night as the training of enumerators is now complete and enumerators will start counting people this evening beginning with people who work in the transport sector as well as in hotels. We would like to urge members of the public to comply by responding to questions they will be asked by the enumerators,” he said.
“Moreover, we are urging everyone to make sure they are counted because census is important as it provides the demographic, social and economic profile of a country and it seeks to answer questions like how many are we, who we are and housing characteristics of where we live.”
Mr Irimai urged Masvingo residents to watch out for criminals who might pretend to be enumerators.
“Our enumerators will not be asking personal information such bank accounts and identity numbers,” he said.
