BULAWAYO sungura music fans were given royal treatment by a limping Alick Macheso and his new look Orchestra Mberikwazvo band on Friday night at the Amphitheatre. The show was curtain raised by DerRick Majaivana who did not disappoint as he warmed the cold Friday night. Fans enjoyed the performance especially each time he sang his father’s songs such as Umoya Wani and Mkhwenyana.
As soon as the Mberikwazvo members took to the stage, the show went a gear up. Many did not know what to expect from the new members but with Devine Wezhira on lead guitar and Lovemore Chekumanyara on drums, the band’s talents were quickly appreciated by fans.
“It’s only the faces that have changed but the performance and instruments are the same,” said Prince Moyana one of the fans at the show.
It was love at first sight between new chanter Zhili and fans.
Many fans started comparing him with Jonas Kasamba, with some suggesting the new boy can only be compared to former Utakataka Express chanter Shiga Shiga as Kasamba was no match.
“This boy can sing and is more in the mould of Shiga Shiga, Kasamba will regret leaving this band because he is no match,” said Lovemore Dhlamini, a fan.
The show almost turned out to be a comparison affair between the “rebels” and the new members. Fans were in agreement, Macheso had found the right replacements for the band.
MaJuice proved to be in a world of his own as he mesmerised the capacity crowd with his dance moves. He took the show to another level when he started imitating dance routine by other musicians. He started off with Leonard Zhakata’s moves but it was the Tongai Moyo dance that brought the house down.
After the show Alick Macheso said it will take some time before this new group gels together and become a real force on the sungura front.
“At the moment we are soldiering on as you can see, it took us time with Franco (Francis Dhaka), Kasamba, Gomba and (Noel) Nyazanda to be where we were.
This is a new look group and we are still improving. All I can say is watch this group and soon you will confirm that Orchestra Mberikwazvo will never die,” he said.
Macheso introduced some new songs that proved popular with fans. Some of the new songs were Ane Bhora Ndiye Anomakwa and Kuroora Inyasha.
