New Mercedes M-class unveiled

5pm were literally burning my feet.
Despite the fact that my feet were literary killing me I had to get ready for my date — the Mercedes M-class 2012 launch.
Created in 1997 by Mercedes-Benz, this luxury SUV was both sweet and challenging, with handling suited for the bushy terrain and a city slicker too thanks primarily to the pioneering use of four-wheel independent suspension in a vehicle of this type. 
It carried the identification letters ML and the factory model designation W163. 
It’s the year 2012, exactly 15 years after it was conceived that this fresh and hot off the shelf latest iteration of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, dubbed the W166, will be gracing the Zimoco showroom right here in Zimbabwe.
Firstly, Mercedes claims “a quantum leap in terms of efficiency, safety, agility, driving enjoyment and design!” 
Clearly, the proof of the claim will be in the driving but judging by the specs on this new model, substantially improved fuel consumption and lower emissions take pride of place thanks in part to the application of revolutionary new technology that reduces internal friction within the engine.
Secondly, the introduction of selective damping improves on and off-road driving comfort as does the use of variable-assistance electric power steering. 
For those who will spend more time off-road, an optional on and off road package uses a range of six transmission modes to optimise handling in variable conditions. 
This function should not be confused with the seven-speed 7G-tronic plus auto gearbox that is mated to a standard-fit eco stop/start system and permanent 4MATIC drive.
Another plus is that its substantially more economical than the outgoing model.
The entire engine range has been overhauled to provide lower carbon emissions and fuel consumption, with little change to performance.
Its clear that the premium brand Mercedes-Benz is making every stride possible to green their wheels all in an effort to save mother nature.
Mercedes further promises that the new M-Class will offer relaxed and thus safe driving in all possible conditions.
By paying close attention to detail, the development engineers in the Mercedes Technology Centre claim to have significantly improved what they call the NVH comfort level (Noise, Vibration, Harshness).
This is an important factor contributing to the general sense of well-being on board, whilst also playing its part in driver-fitness safety, especially on long journeys.
The especially rigid body of the new M-Class provides the basis for the high level of NVH comfort.
Interior comfort levels have also been enhanced through a programme intended to replicate the “well-being inherent in the top class Mercedes saloons”.
The good news is that the wonderfully effective audio 20 sound system will be standard across all models.
I can also tell you that four high-quality wood finishes, or one aluminum trim option, will be available alongside a choice of four upholstery colours.
The interior of the new Mercedes-Benz M-Class can thus be appointed to reflect either exclusive refinement or sporty sophistication, according to the customer’s taste.
For those who really like to stand out from the crowd, an AMG exterior sports package can be made available by special order.
Styling is typical of the more recent Mercedes-Benz models, with beefed up, more aggressive lines and a wide, purposeful stance, accentuated by a wide front grille and a large, and proudly mounted three-pointed star.
Aside from the bewildering array of gadgetry designed to improve efficiency, the new M-Class has equipment to improve handling, dynamics, refinement and comfort.
The suspension uses selective damping to ensure a soft, comfortable ride at low speeds and over rough surfaces both on and off road, but to give a firmer ride and improve stability when the car is pushed hard.
These improvements and refinements are achieved through all manner of clever tech, including new fuel injection techniques taken from the AMG performance engines, a start/stop system, weight reduction and aerodynamic refinements.
Additionally, all pumps and ancillary components are activated only when they are needed, improving efficiency.
Along the same lines, an electronic power steering system weights the steering according to the circumstances.
So on rougher surfaces the steering is lighter, but at higher speeds it weights up to improve handling.
After dinner, a few glasses of wine speeches from the Zimoco chief executive Bob Crossley and his team and the unveiling of the M, there was a surprise, which was pleasant but unexpected.
It was in the form of a hot little red number on wheels. I shall not tell you much about it save to say you should check it out at the Harare Auto Show this weekend at the Zimoco stand.
