THE Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) says it will import over 1,4 million tonnes of grain in the next 12 months to ensure food security in the country following El Niño-induced drought.
Speaking at a press conference in Harare on Thursday, GMAZ chairperson Mr Tafadzwa Musarara said the move is also aimed at keeping grain prices as low as possible.
“Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe is now gearing up to increase its imports with plans to procure 1,4 million tonnes from international suppliers,” he said.
“We express our support for the producer price of US$390 per tonne and have welcomed new players in the sector for food distribution in the country.”
Zimbabwe needs at least US$2 billion to mitigate the effects of drought and build resilience for future shocks.
