A two-day annual general meeting for artisanal and small-scale miners under the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF), to be addressed by Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando, starts in Harare today.

The meeting is themed “Sustainable Mining: A Catalyst Towards National Development”.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online, ZMF president Ms Henrietta Rushwaya said they expected representatives from all provinces to attend and share ideas and experiences within the mining sector.

“We are holding our annual general meeting from the 11th to the 12th at the Harare Hippodrome in Braeside, Harare,” she said. “Minister Chitando is scheduled to address the attendees.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy against environmental degradation, which includes deforestation, habitat destruction, pollution, soil erosion, human-wildlife conflict and biodiversity loss.”

Ms Rushwaya said collaboration was crucial in ensuring that mining contributes positively to national development while also safeguarding Zimbabwe’s natural resources.

The Government has called on gold miners to increase production to support the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency introduced in April.
