MINING companies’ sports and wellness programmes are improving health outcomes in communities, Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Marian Chombo has said.
She was speaking at the sending-off ceremony for cyclists who began the grueling 320-km Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke at Zimplats’ Complex in Selous on Thursday.
The event will see athletes cycle a distance of 170km to Kwekwe, stay there overnight and then proceed to Shurugwi the next morning.
The race ends on Saturday, with the final leg being a ride between Shurugwi and Zvishavane.
“Let me commend the mining companies for their robust wellness programmes for employees and the community, many of which support healthy behaviour and the improvement of health outcomes, with prevention of illness as the key element,” she said.
This year’s Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke is being held under the theme “Cycling for wellness, opportunity and charity”.
