MISS Universe Zimbabwe’s new era is gathering serious momentum, and one of the women at the centre of the transformation is newly appointed board member Apphia Nyasha Musavengana, who has unveiled a bold vision to turn the pageant into a world-class platform for beauty, brains and purpose.

As the countdown and excitement build around the return of one of the country’s most recognisable beauty brands, Apphia says Zimbabwe is sitting on enormous untapped talent, and now is the time to raise standards, modernise operations and prepare local queens to compete confidently on the international stage.

A respected leader and strategic advisor, Apphia brings experience in executive leadership, governance, project coordination and stakeholder relations.

She is also widely passionate about women’s empowerment, youth advancement and community upliftment, particularly around creating opportunities for the girl child.

Her appointment has already stirred optimism among pageant followers who believe fresh thinking is exactly what Miss Universe Zimbabwe needs.

Speaking on her new role, Apphia said she serves as a board member and advisor to the chairlady, where she will help shape decisions, strengthen systems and ensure the pageant runs with professionalism and purpose.

“My role involves contributing to key decision-making processes, providing strategic direction, supporting executive leadership and ensuring the organisation operates efficiently and in alignment with its vision and governance standards,” she said.

But Apphia made it clear that her mission goes far beyond boardroom meetings.

She wants to help create queens who are marketable, intelligent, socially aware and globally competitive.

“I aim to bring a more structured and globally competitive approach to the pageant. This includes strengthening brand positioning, enhancing contestant development programmes, improving stakeholder engagement and introducing innovative fundraising strategies.”

In short, Apphia wants Zimbabwe’s beauty queens to be complete brands, not just contestants in gowns and heels.

“I also want to amplify digital presence and ensure contestants are equipped with skills beyond the runway such as leadership, communication and entrepreneurship.”

Her comments have been welcomed by many who feel modern pageantry now demands far more than physical beauty. In today’s world, queens are expected to speak confidently, run campaigns, influence communities and represent nations on major platforms.

Apphia says Zimbabwe has all the ingredients to shine globally, but the industry must become more consistent, transparent and professionally managed.

“The pageant industry in Zimbabwe has immense potential but requires consistency, professionalism and stronger investment. To meet international standards, we need grooming, branding, transparency and partnerships,” she said.

“There must be structured training programmes, global exposure for contestants and adherence to world-class production standards.”

She also praised stakeholders who continue supporting the revival of the pageant sector, saying rebuilding takes teamwork, sacrifice and belief.

According to insiders, part of Apphia’s long-term vision includes mentorship programmes for contestants, stronger mental wellness support, business networking opportunities, charity outreach projects and expanding the Miss Universe Zimbabwe brand beyond the crowning night.

When asked what Zimbabweans should expect this year, Apphia promised an edition unlike any before.

“This year, expect a more refined, transparent and impactful pageant. We are focusing on empowering contestants holistically, improving production quality and aligning with international standards,” she said.

“The pageant is taking place on June 6 at Harare’s Hippodrome, and we are excited about preparations. The entertainment line- up has been revealed and everything is going according to plan.”

“There will be stronger community engagement initiatives, enhanced training programmes and a platform that truly celebrates beauty, intelligence and purpose.”

She added that the board was working around the clock to create a memorable showcase of Zimbabwean excellence.

“The Miss Universe board is on their toes to make sure we deliver an unforgettable, historical stage showing Zimbabwe’s natural beauty and raw talent. Wait for the best ever Miss Universe.”

She said Bulawayo had their auditions last weekend while Harare’s edition this coming weekend.
