It was a tale of mixed fortunes for Zimbabwe’s cycling team during their sojourn in Ghana for the African Cycling Confederation (CAC) Africa Road Championships last week.
Zimbabwe sent 10 athletes.
“The team performed very well considering they were also outnumbered by other nations in terms of team size.
“Their performance has seen Zimbabwe’s ranking climb up to eighth in Africa and 72nd in the world,” said Cycling Zimbabwe’s technical director Crosby Mashiri.
The team included Andrew Chikwaka, Rodrick Shumba, Solomon Mugavazi, Helen Mitchell, Skye Davidson, Priscilla Mashamba, Elsie Mahumbe, Jessica Fuller, Lovemore Ntini and Nesta Charles.
They took part in the team time trial, individual time trial, mixed relay and road races, winning a bronze medal and securing 150 Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) points.
Fuller won the country’s solitary medal, a bronze in the women’s junior individual time trial.
She also finished fifth in the road race.
In the individual time trial, each competitor was required to complete a set distance on their own, after which their times would be captured.
The team time trial required a team of a minimum of three riders starting and finishing together, while the mixed relay required male and female teams of three riders.
