POTIPHER Mopo, an upcoming sungura artiste and son to veteran sungura musician Mike Mopo, will on May 31 release his fourth album titled “Ndimi munotonga”.
The seven-track album is made up of songs “Kusina Amai”, “Ngoma Yekwedu”, “Sango”, “Havandikoromotse”, “Kumakura”, “Handina Mhaka” and “Mabhanan’ana”.
Mopo, who made a grand entrance onto the music scene with the hit song “Ndorerwa Nesango”, is following the footsteps of his father who retired from the music industry in 2016 to become a pastor and businessman.
Potipher, who revived his father’s ZINAWA band, has produced three albums to date, namely “Runyararo”, “Ndega Zvangu” and “Ngaikwane Mambo”.
The upcoming artiste says he draws inspiration from his father, who excelled at a time when the sungura genre had immensely gifted artistes such as the late Leonard Dembo, John Chibadura and James Chimombe.
“My father was active when the sungura genre had talented musicians. Today, the same genre boasts such talented artists as Alick Macheso, Romeo Gasa, Mark Ngwazi and Simon Mutambi, among others. My father did very well despite the competition. I am also going to do the same,” he said.
Potipher is set to launch his album barely a week before sungura heavyweight Alick Macheso releases his own.
“I am anxious to find out how my album will perform since I am going to launch it at almost the same time with Macheso.”
