MOTORISTS have been urged to be vigilant and cautious on the roads during the rainy season and impending festive holidays in order to avoid traffic accidents that usually occur during this period.

To promote safety for road users, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) said they will be conducting awareness campaigns across Manicaland Province and throughout the country.

TSCZ media and corporate communications officer, Ms Lucy Kuwandira said most of the road accidents are avoidable as they are attributed to human error.

“Taking precautionary measures during the rainy season and festive holidays, which is usually characterised by a lot of travelling, is important for every road user’s safety. Road become slippery and visibility is reduced when driving in the rain and drivers should always exercise caution by vigilance by reducing speed and maintaining a safe following distance. Drivers need to adjust to the conditions of the road and take individual responsibility to reduce road carnage as this causes loss of lives and damage to property,” she said.

Ms Kuwandira urged drivers to avoid parking under trees and utilise proper parking spaces as trees fallen by strong winds during the rainy pose danger to human live and damage to vehicles.

She added that they will be working together with the police to enforce road rules and regulations during the festive holidays.
