Zimbabwe international star midfielder Marshall Munetsi, who has been in superb form for his French side Stade de Reims, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Marc-Vivien Foe Award.
The Marc-Vivien Foe accolade is given to the most outstanding African player in France’s top-tier Ligue1 every season in honour of the late Cameroonian international player Marc-Vivien Foé, who collapsed and died on the pitch while playing for his country at the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2003.
Munetsi (26) is presently on top of his game, with consistent and impressive shifts that have yielded six goals and three assists so far this season. This is a career high for the versatile Warriors enforcer.
Combining both graft and craft in the centre of the park, the midfielder has starred in all but four of his team’s league games which saw them going on a 19-match unbeaten run. This catapulted his team from 17th to 8th position on the league log standings.
For his commanding show, Munetsi will compete with 10 other players for the Marc-Vivien Foe Award, among which include Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi and last season’s winner Seko Fofana of Ivory Coast and Lens.
The winner will be announced on May 30.
Munetsi becomes the second Zimbabwean player to be nominated for the award after compatriot Tino Kadewere, who is now plying his trade at Real Mallorca in the Spanish La Liga, in 2021.
