MUTARE is today hosting the Urban Councils Association of Zimbabwe (UCAZ) 100th anniversary, which will see mayors, chairpersons, councillors, town clerks and senior council officials from 32 urban local authorities as well as senior government officials and representatives of industry and commerce attended the celebrations.
The commemorations, which are running under the theme “UCAZ @100: Celebrating Excellence and Resilience”, were launched in Bulawayo during the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) week.
Local Government and Public Works Minister, July Moyo, as well as other dignitaries are expected to attend the evening awards dinner at Golden Peacock Hotel where local authorities will receive special recognition certificates as committed members.
Sporting activities that include soccer, netball and golf golf have also been lined up at Sakubva Stadium, Sakubva Beit Hall and Hillside Golf Club respectively as part of the UCAZ centenary celebrations.
UCAZ was established in 1923 as a loose forum of municipalities with the purpose of discussing matters of common concern.
The association was formally constituted in 1940 and a permanent secretariat was established.
The founding members of UCAZ are the cities of Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Kadoma, Mutare, Masvingo and the Municipality of Bindura and Mashava.
