POLICE in Mutare rural have banned the carrying of dangerous weapons in public as cases involving the use of such weapons have become prevalent and jeopardising people’s safety.
The move is aimed at curtailing criminal offences and violent crimes following an upsurge in murder, armed robbery, burglary, theft and assault cases involving the use of machetes, knobkerries, knives, spears, axes, catapults and other traditional weapons.
In an interview, Officer Commanding Mutare Rural District, Chief Superintendent Plaxedes Mbira, said the prohibition order came into force on May 15 and will run until August 15.
“We have realised that crime has increased in Mutare Rural District and this is a cause for concern. Armed robberies, murders, assault and unlawful entry have become rampant and these crimes are committed using dangerous weapons like machetes, knobkerries, knives, spears and axes.
“I, therefore, issue an order prohibiting the carrying of such weapons in the mentioned area or any part thereof; that is from May 15 to August 15. Any person who fails to comply with this prohibition order shall be guilt of an offence of contravening Section 4 of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act and can be fined or imprisoned for a period not exceeding six months,” said Chief Superintendent Mbira.
Chief Superintendent Mbira urged the public to maintain peace and uphold the law at all times.
