THE City of Mutare will, with effect from July 1, start billing tariffs in US$ for services provided to customers as a way of preserving the value of payments made.
However, clients are allowed to pay using local currency at the prevailing official exchange rate at the time of payment.
In a statement, the local authority said it will now maintain all the outstanding balances in US$.
“Notice is hereby given to all residents and stakeholders of the City of Mutare that with effect from July 1, all council billing will be done in US$. Residents and stakeholders have a choice to effect payment either in US$ or ZWL$ converted at the prevailing official exchange rate at the date of payment.
“With effect from the said date, council will now maintain all the debtors’ balances and index tariffs for services in US$ ,” reads the notice.
The local authority said service statements will reflect US$ balances.
The move, City of Mutare said, is in line with the 2023 budget approved tariff which is based on US$ charged at the prevailing official auction rate.
Added the local authority: “This development is meant to preserve value, given the exchange rate volatility. Council remains committed to providing efficient and quality services.”
City of Mutare urged its customers to pay their bills on time to ensure smooth delivery of basic services.
