A WORKSHOP that is meant to disseminate findings of an aquaculture survey began today in Kadoma, bringing together industry leaders, fish farmers and other stakeholders.
The survey, conducted in five provinces, aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state of aquaculture in Zimbabwe.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), under the FISH4ACP Countries project, provided technical and financial support for the survey.
Officially opening the workshop, Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources Department director Mr Milton Makumbe said the survey, conducted in 2024, collected data on farmer distribution, challenges in input distribution and opportunities for market expansion.
“The survey’s findings will provide us with a comprehensive understanding of the current state of aquaculture in Zimbabwe, highlighting opportunities for fish farmers to expand their market and improve logistics,” said Mr Makumbe.
Data from the survey, he said, has already contributed to Zimbabwe’s recognition at the 15th Malabo Montpellier Forum for its fast-growing fisheries and aquaculture sector.
Mr Makumbe underscored the importance of partnerships with organisations like the Agricultural Marketing Authority and banks for marketing and financial investment in the sector.
The Government aims aquaculture to a US$1 billion sector.
