Dairy and Cereal company – Nestle Zimbabwe – today celebrated World Milk Day, with a commitment to promote entrepreneurship in dairy farming through the Nestle Dairy Empowerment Scheme (NDES).

Launched in 2011, NDES supports small scale farmers by establishing milk collection centres, solar-powered boreholes to address water challenges for irrigation, pasture and silage support to reduce commercial feed as well as knowledge transfer.

In a statement to celebrate World Milk Day, Nestle’s Corporate Communications officer Ms Yemurai Zhou said the NDES programme has evolved over the years to focus on Agripreneurship.

“We support our dairy farmers and farming partners to be entrepreneurial or have the entrepreneurial mindset. It creates sustainability and at a large scale creates economic opportunities and social impact in rural communities,” she said.

She also said the company now has three small-scale farmer groups in Chitomborwizi in Mashonaland West, Watershed in Hwedza and Agro Prosperity Trust in Marondera.

“These groups have almost 70 individual dairy farmers in total,” she said.
