MUTASA Rural District Council (MRDC)’s newly elected chairperson, Councillor Paddington Nemaunga believes the district is a sleeping tourism and infrastructure development giant.
In the first MRDC full council meeting following the training and induction of councillors, elections were conducted for the position of council chairperson.
Contestants, Councillor Julius Gwazai and Councillor Paddington Nemaunga emerged tied on 14 votes each.
Lots were cast for the two candidates, resulting in Mr Nemaunga of Zanu PF being duly elected as Mutasa RDC chairperson.
He will be deputised by Ward Six councillor, Councillor Regina Barara.
In an interview after his installation, Cde Nemaunga said the area has a lot of potential in different sectors of the economy.
“We want to resolve the water crisis in Tsvingwe. It has been problematic for a long time and I believe this is the time to find a lasting solution to the issue.
“Roads in some parts of the district are in bad shape and we will work on them. This is part of the infrastructure development agenda that we will be undertaking as a council. At the same time, we want to promote tourism in the district. This actually dovetails into Vision 2023 that we have as a nation as espoused by His Excellency, President Mnangagwa,” said Councillor Nemaunga.
Mutasa has, among other tourism products, Osborne Dam, Small Bridge Dam, Pungwe Views, Mutarazi Falls, Mahwemasike Mountain Range and the tea estates.
