THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has delayed by four hours the commencement of the Norton Town Council Ward 3 by-election following a High Court ruling that disqualified one of the candidates, Walter Munyeveri.
ZEC acting chief elections officer Mr Simbarashe Tongayi announced in a notice that polling, initially scheduled to begin at 7am today will now commence at 11am and close at 11pm.
The delay comes after the High Court issued a ruling at 1.55 am this morning setting aside Munyeveri’s nomination.
ZEC said the ruling made it difficult to proceed with the election as originally planned and that the commission must print new ballot papers, excluding Munyeveri’s name.
The by-election will now proceed with two candidates: ZANU-PF’s Tsomondo Wilson Charamba and independent candidate Preston Tanatswa Paradzayi.
ZEC confirmed that polling stations would remain unchanged despite the revised voting hours.
