THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has cleared over 1 000 illegal garbage dumps in Harare Metropolitan province under the Emergency Solid Waste Management Programme, which commenced last month.

Addressing Wednesday’s post-Cabinet briefing, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said EMA targets to clear more illegal garbage dumps across the province over the next six weeks.

“Treasury released the first tranche of the scheduled three equal releases of US$700 000 on October 23, 2023. As at November 8, 2023, a cumulative total of 1 083 illegal dumps had been cleared, translating to 54 percent of the target,” said Dr Muswere.

“The main focus in the next six weeks will be to clear all remaining dumps. The target is to clear the following waste dumps: 10 per day in Harare; nine per day in Chitungwiza; two per day in Epworth; and two per day in Ruwa.”
