The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has called on travellers to prioritise road safety as the nation prepares for a busy festive season.
With more people expected to travel during the holiday, the organisation has outlined a series of essential tips to ensure the safety of both passengers and drivers.
Mr Tafadzwa Goliati, the national coordinator of PAZ, said it was important to prepare for the journey well in advance.
“Before you set off, make sure your vehicle is roadworthy,” he said.
“Check the weather forecast, plan your route and ensure your phone is fully charged with a car charger on hand. Packing essentials like water, snacks and a first-aid kit can also make a huge difference in case of emergencies.”
While on the road, Mr Goliati stressed the need for responsible driving and urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and taking regular breaks to avoid fatigue.
“It is also crucial to be on the look-out for pedestrians and wildlife, especially in rural areas. If you are driving at night or in low-light conditions, always use your headlights to improve visibility,” he said.
Another critical issue highlighted by PAZ was the danger of drinking and driving.
“Never drink and drive. It is a deadly combination,” Mr Goliati said.
“Alcohol impairs your judgment and reaction time, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. If you have been drinking, call a taxi or use a ride-sharing service. We all have the responsibility to keep the roads safe for ourselves and others.”
For travellers using public transport, Mr Goliati urged caution at bus termini.
“Be aware of your surroundings, safeguard your belongings and always verify the bus operator and vehicle before boarding,” he said. “Ensure that the bus is roadworthy and has a valid operating licence.
“We want everyone to enjoy their holidays, but safety must always come first. Let us all do our part to make this festive season accident-free.”
