THE Bulawayo Museum has opened a pictorial gallery for the city tracking its development since 1894. It is 120 years since Bulawayo was established and declared a city.On Thursday, the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) officially opened the new gallery display, which also covers some of the council’s achievements.
Representing Martin Moyo, the Mayor of Bulawayo, deputy Mayor Gift Banda said the pictorial display will immortalise the city’s great history.
“This historic display largely focuses on the administration of the city. You will agree with me that a comprehensive display of Bulawayo would need the entire museum to adequately house the city’s social, economic, cultural and political history,” Clr Banda told delegates.
He said Bulawayo would continue to cherish the zeal for development shown by its forefathers as stated in the city’s motto “Siye-Phambili”.
“This foundation created a city that became an industrial hub of the country,” said Clr Banda.
He said in celebrating the 120 years the city was also celebrating being a centre of tourist attraction.
NMMZ western region marketing officer Phineas Chauke said the city’s pictorial exhibition was meant to reflect on the history and achievements of the city.
“We want people to appreciate the historical position of the city. Bulawayo is the country’s cultural hub and has a rich heritage that every proud Bulawayo resident should know,” he said.
While the city is celebrating 120 years the museum is celebrating its golden jubilee, or 50 years of existence.
