DOMESTIC violence, extra-marital affairs and property disputes are at the heart of mounting murder cases in the country, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said.

Beyond these domestic-related killings, police are also investigating a spike in homicides stemming from alcohol-fuelled violence, witchcraft accusations and financial disputes.

In a statement on Wednesday, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the police were concerned with the number of murder cases occurring throughout the country.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with the number of murder cases which are occurring throughout the country due to domestic violence which include extra-marital affairs, sharing of property on separation and failure to resolve petty issues by couples,” he said.

“Murder cases are also being recorded from people clashing at beer-drinking places, witchcraft allegations and debt settlement disputes.”

In a recent incident in Tengwe, Hurungwe, Liberty Chimurambi (28) fatally stabbed his wife Aphocine Mandimutsa (24) before taking his own life.

The couple was reportedly experiencing marital problems due to infidelity.

In Marondera, Ezekiel Chibvongodze (29) murdered his wife Mitchel Evelyn Katakwe (25) and their five-year-old son Tawana.

Domestic disputes also claimed the life of Douglas Choga (45) in Sadza. His wife, Memory Choga (41) is in custody after allegedly assaulting him to death following an argument over a money transfer.

Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway for Disco Mubonesi (29), accused of murdering his aunt, Mandawani Muponesi (60) in Chipinge on July 20.

Mubonesi allegedly burnt down his aunt’s hut and stabbed her, accusing her of witchcraft.

The ZRP has also recorded a disturbing trend of minors killing each other while engaged in play or chores.
