NEW: Police refute claims of cancelling traffic fines at Harare “crime hotspots”, clarify smart traffic camera operations

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has denied claims that it intends to cancel traffic violations at certain junctions in Harare perceived to be crime hotspots.

In a press statement released today, police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police have never stated it would nullify traffic offences recorded by smart cameras at reported “crime hotspots”.

Instead, he said, the cameras are actively monitored in real-time to enforce traffic laws and to monitor for criminal activities occurring at those road junctions.

“The police has instead noted the concerns and clearly said that each case will be treated based on its merits as the cameras are monitored in real-time,” the statement read.

Addressing public safety fears raised by motorists and journalists regarding night driving and alleged crime hotspots, the police said the Officer Commanding Harare Province is closely monitoring deployments.

The ZRP maintained that, due to strategic deployments in these mentioned areas, no criminal acts have been recorded for quite some time.

Comm Nyathi urged motorists to remain law-abiding citizens by observing all road rules and regulations, reiterating that these measures are ultimately for the safety of all Zimbabweans.
