NEW: Police warn against illegally acquiring firearms

Online Reporter

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has warned members of the public to desist from illegally buying firearms as most of them are being used to commit serious crimes.

The police said the law will take its course on anyone found in possession of such firearms.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has noted with great concern the proliferation of firearms countrywide, most of which are acquired illegally and exacerbating the commission of heinous crimes,” said police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi in a statement.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police advises the public that the regulation and issuance of firearm certificates is the sole responsibility of the Controller of Firearms.

“It has also been noted with great concern that some firearms holders are no longer renewing their firearms (licences) and certificates, as well as notifying the authorities about changes in their business and residential addresses. Any deviation from the regulations regarding firearms possession and certification is a chargeable offence under the Firearms Act Chapter 10.09.”
