NEW: President Mnangagwa urges peace in the region

President Mnangagwa has called on Africa, particularly the Southern Africa region, to prioritise peace and avoid war, saying conflicts hinder development and prosperity.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Joint Command and Staff Course Number 37 at the Zimbabwe Staff College in Harare on Friday, the President stressed the importance of peaceful resolutions to disputes.

“Once again, I urge Africa and our SADC region to intensify efforts to ‘Silence The Guns’ on our continent,” he said.

“The astronomical cost of wars and conflicts deprives our people of the much-needed development and prosperity. The SADC Mutual Defence Pact and the United Nations Charter compel states to resolve international disputes through peaceful means.”

He added, “We have a duty to pursue peace in ways that enhance regional and international security, peace, and justice.”

President Mnangagwa called on the Staff College to diversify its programs to better equip officers with the skills needed for conflict resolution.

“I direct the Staff College and other defence and security institutions to expand their curriculum,” he said.

“Programmes should focus on providing officers with the necessary tools to promote the peaceful settlement of disputes through negotiation, conciliation, mediation, or arbitration, for the benefit of our people.”
