THE Presidential Fisheries Scheme will significantly enhance food security and nutrition as well as improve livelihoods among beneficiary communities, Buhera South legislator, Cde Ngoni Mudekunye has said.
Government is on a drive to consolidate the fisheries value chain and is targeting a robust US$1 billion fish industry by 2030.
In an interview, Cde Mudekunye said the fisheries programme, which is already being rolled out, has an empowerment thrust, with local stakeholders, community leaders and beneficiaries in collaborative efforts to foster a sense of ownership of the programme.
“This programme is already being rolled out after it was launched at Nehumambi Primary School and it will be spread to all the other villages and schools in Buhera South. It is targeting vulnerable communities in order to improve food security and nutrition as well as enhance livelihoods. This comes as a fulfilment of some of the promises made by the Second Republic during the campaign period of last year’s harmonised elections.
“The initiative is also one of the high-impact and life-changing projects President Mnangagwa is rolling out in several communities across the country. The Second Republic is committed to spearheading development even in marginalised communities in line with the spirit of leaving no one and no place behind.,” said Cde Mudekunye.
Government’s sustained drive to promote aquaculture is hinged on capitalising on the country’s abundant water resources and favourable climate conditions suitable for the sector.
