THE rehabilitation of a block of flats at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo is almost complete, while a new staff residence block is now at slab level.

The block of flats was gutted by fire earlier in May.

Government committed $287 million towards refurbishment of the staff hostels and the building of a new staff residence.

Mpilo Central Hospital CEO, Professor Solwayo Ngwenya, shared the good news on his Twitter handle on Friday.

“Mpilo Central Hospital’s previously burnt buildings are shaping up nicely. Great progress. The ‘white house’ shall be ready next week. The new doctors’ H-flat having a firm foundation. Magnificent work rate from the builders and partners,” Professor Ngwenya tweeted.

In an interview, Professor Ngwenya said the completion of the rehabilitation work and the construction of the new doctors’ accommodation will be implemented in three phases.

“This will be in three phases. The ‘white house’ will be completed next week, while work on the doctors’ quarters will be completed at the end of December.

“The construction of the new staff residence will be completed in March 2022. Meanwhile, the affected doctors are still housed in accommodation secured by the hospital,” he said.
