CANDIDATES that will contest in Saturday’s by-elections must be evaluated on their competence to hold office, residents of Marondera have said.

The growing sentiment follows increasing service delivery failures by the current Marondera municipality.

The concerned residents questioned why the road that leads to the councillor for Ward 7’s house was given priority.

“All street roads in Nyameni are in a bad state, it’s known. We are not happy that the road that passes the Ward 7 councillor’s house is the only one repaired. Why was it given priority?” asked a concerned resident.

In an interview, the Marondera Residents Open Forum (MAROF) director, Mr Tapiwa Chengeta, said residents should elect councillors who are competent.

“Residents must critically assess councillors who want to be voted for. We are urging you, residents, to evaluate the credentials of council candidates before you vote for them into office,” he said.

Marondera Urban Business Forum (MUBF) chairperson, Mr Emmanuel Danha, suggested that Marondera municipality councillors should have skills in various fields to execute their duties professionally.

Councillors, especially from the opposition, have been accused of serving their personal interests ahead of the community.
