NEW: Retailers hail removal of VAT on rice

LOCAL retailers have hailed the removal of value added tax (VAT) on rice and potato seed, as well as the relaxation of grain imports.

Players in the industry say the developments will significantly contribute  to food security.

In a statement, the Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers president, Mr Denford Mutashu said the move will go a long way in easing pressure on the general citizenry.

“The removal of value added tax on rice is a welcome move. As the next substitute for maize, rice must be affordable to all households,” he said.

“This is in line with regional parity and will ensure our retailers can compete with imports.”

Mr Mutashu added that the relaxation of grain imports (specifically maize and wheat) is most welcome as it allows retailers and wholesalers to sufficiently stock up.

“We are happy that all our recommendations have been taken on board. We hope that the necessary statutory instruments will be fast-tracked to ensure that this development reflects on the shelves,” said Mr Mutashu.

The CRZ president also believes that the re-activation of the Grain Mobilisation Committee will play a massive role in ensuring transparency in the sector.
