More than 200 local families are set to receive support from the 2024 Ruwa Local Board Chairperson’s Christmas Cheer Fund, which was launched last week.
The annual initiative seeks to uplift the lives of less-privileged families, while fostering unity and generosity within the community.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Ruwa Local Board chairperson Councillor Michael Mataruka said public contributions were key to achieving the fund’s ambitious goals.
“I appeal to everyone to dig deep into their pockets, whether in cash or kind,” he said. “We have publicised the bank account details and assembled an efficient team to ensure all donations reach the most vulnerable in our community.
“By targeting 200 families this year, we hope to provide not just essentials, but also a sense of hope and dignity.”
A multifaceted approach to fundraising and community engagement has been adopted; it is marked by planned events that include charity runs.
The fundraising efforts are being led by a dedicated committee comprising council staff, local businesses and residents.
Speaking to The Sunday Mail, the cheer fund committee vice chairperson and council spokesperson, Mrs Josephine Mupakati, said there were plans to facilitate financial literacy and entrepreneurship workshops, in collaboration with local non-governmental organisations and corporates, as part of efforts to provide the vulnerable families with sustainable livelihoods.
“It is vital that our support goes beyond temporary assistance; we want to empower families to build a better future for themselves,” she said. “As the campaign gears up, the cheer fund team is optimistic about reaching its goal.
“However, we acknowledge that only through collective action can we truly make a difference; every donation, no matter how small, counts.”
