A 33-YEAR-OLD man based in South Africa was last week jailed for 16 years by a Mothibistad regional court after he was found guilty of fatally stabbing another Zimbabwean man following a brawl over a seat at a shebeen in Mapoteng village.

Proud Makuni (33) was slapped with a further two-year jail term for illegally staying in South Africa.

He was convicted of killing Phillip Kashere.

Prosecutor Kekeletso Lekota said on August 8, 2022, Kashere found Makuni and four other people sitting in a shebeen drinking beer.

The owner of the shebeen asked the five men to sit properly and accommodate Kashere as he was drinking while standing.

Makuni refused to comply, thereby sparking an argument.

Makuni later fetched a knife and stabbed Kashere six times in the back, head and upper arm.

During trial, Makuni denied stabbing Kashere and said he found him dead after he had gone to buy some cigarettes.

He accused the other men of killing him.

He was, however, convicted after a full trial.

Meanwhile, five Zimbabweans — Mbonisi Ndlovu (27), Doubt Mlilo (28), Mbonisi Dube (33), Mduduzi Ndlovu (23) and Gundo Masikhiwa (26) — have been jailed for 10 years after being convicted of stealing two solar batteries from a Vodacom cellphone tower in South Africa.

The five were each jailed for another nine months for stealing copper cables.

Mbonisi Ndlovu, Mlilo and Dube were further sentenced to three years in prison for staying illegally in South Africa when they appeared at the Upington regional court.
