THE Government has availed $680 000 through the Community Development Fund towards the building of a new primary school at Bekezela township in Filabusi, Matabeleland South.
Once complete, the school will help decongest Bekezela Government Primary School which is meant to enrol around 700-800 pupils but is home to 1 400 pupils. In an interview, Insiza Rural District Council chief executive officer Mr Fidres Manombe said from the money they have now managed to fence the area where the school will be build.
“We started this project in August and we have already fenced the area. So far we have managed to build one block and we intend to build two more blocks, ablution block and the caretaker’s house soon,” said Mr Manombe.
Bekezela Development Committee chair Mr Pilate Siziba said the project will go a long way in addressing challenges children in the area were facing in accessing education.
“Our children were learning in large numbers in classrooms and that made it almost impossible for the teacher to engage with all students, therefore this new school will reduce pressure as some students will be transferred,” he said.
He said community members were also involved in provision of labour.
Filabusi has also received another batch of $559 000 which will be used to finish up a clinic in Ward Four at Mbondweni.
“The clinic is almost done, the only thing left is to build a staff house and toilets. We also received help from World Vision,” said Mr Manombe.
