NEW: Shot in the arm for Gutu students

FOR some children in this part of Gutu, access to educational facilities is a huge ask.

They walk long distances to get to school, where they sit on the floor during lessons, because there’s no furniture.

It’s also difficult for girls to get sanitary pads.

Students in this area are still lagging behind in e-learning, as they can’t access computers.

However, there was a silver lining for students at Chitsa Primary and Secondary schools, after a Harare businessman who was born and bred in Gutu, returned home with a rescue package on Friday.

Panjap Motors owner, Mr Brighton Ushendibaba, who is also a director at Premier Soccer League side Simba Bhora, donated various goods including football and netball equipment, a 16-seater minibus and sanitary pads.

Mr Ushendibaba believes the quality of education in the country can improve if well-to-do businessmen, give back to their communities.

He also pledged to buy furniture and text books for Chitsa Primary School.

He grew up in the area and went to Chitsa Primary School back in the 1990s.

“Today I am back here, where I grew up, to make this presentation.

“As they say, charity begins at home,” said Mr Ushendibaba, who is a member of Chitsa Old Students Association.

“I am touched by the plight of students at this school. I was told they walk nearly 10km to fulfill sports fixtures.

“That’s why I have donated a mini bus.

“I have a message for the school children, prioritize education, even if you are into sport.

“Stay away from alcohol and drugs. Concentrate on school and sport, because ou are the one who can make or destroy your life.”

Mr Ushendibaba says he is an inspiration to the rural folk.

“I am now doing well in Harare but l learnt at Chitsa Primary School.

“So, I am an example that one can rise from the rural areas and become successful.”

Chief Chitsa hailed Mr Ushendibaba for his gesture.

“This is not a political event, Mr Ushendibaba is here to assist the school, which should be a lesson for all successful people.

“Let’s remember where we came from and that way we will also be helping the government.

“Nyika inovakwa ne vene vayo, President Emmerson Mnangagwa is always saying.”
