ONGOING works on Simon Mazorodze Road, the urban section of the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Road project, are expected to be completed by the end of this year, with two interchanges at the Willowvale and Remembrance Drive junctions, as well as rehabilitation of the existing flyover, expected to be completed by March 2028.
In an interview, deputy director for construction and maintenance in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development Engineer Virginia Mawere said approximately five kilometres of roadworks remain along Simon Mazorodze Road.
“Simon Mazorodze Road is part of the works being done under the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge road project. So, Simon Mazorodze Road forms the urban section of the project in Harare,” Mawere said.
She said the project also includes upgrading the junctions at Remembrance Drive and Willowvale Road into interchanges, as well as rehabilitating and reinstating the existing Simon Mazorodze flyover.
“The timeline we are looking at is such that, for the road component, we are targeting completion by the end of this year, 2026. For the structures that I have mentioned (interchanges and the flyover), we are looking at early 2028. By March 2028, these three structures will be completed,” she said.
The works, Eng Mawere said, are expected to separate traffic, reduce congestion and improve safety by eliminating conflict points.
She described the area as one of the key nodes identified due to high traffic volumes, where motorists spend more time than necessary at junctions — a situation she said is bad for business and burdensome for the working public.
“It is also unfavourable for the working public to spend three or four hours in traffic after work,” Eng Mawere said.
“By separating traffic, we eliminate conflict points and ensure that we have a safer and more reliable road network within that area.”
Once complete, the project is expected to ease movement along the busy Harare route, reduce travel times and improve reliability for motorists and businesses.
