THOUSANDS of people from different walks of life today thronged Sakubva Stadium for the 43rd Independence Day Manicaland provincial main celebrations.
This year’s commemorations were held under the theme “Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo/Ilizwe Lakhiwa Ngabanikazi Balo.”
Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Nokuthula Matsikenyeri, officiated at the event and read President Mnangagwa’s speech.
A delegation from neighbouring Mozambique, headed by Manica Province governor Madame Francisca Domingos Tomas, graced the occasion.
Entertainment at the Uhuru celebrations – which attracted a full house of a colourful crowd of people from different walks of life including the business community and politicians, among others – was provided by the uniformed forces, churches, schools traditional dance groups, poets and drum majorettes.
The crowd was also treated to soccer matches pitting women football outfits Faith Drive and Mutare City Rovers as well as ZIFA Eastern Region Division One cross-town rivals Buffaloes and Tenax.
In Chipinge, thousands of people thronged Grassflats Primary School where the district’s celebrations were held.
A delegation from Mozambique led by Mossourize District administrator Cde Samuel Fernando, who was accompanied by the neigbouring country’s ruling party Frelimo officials and other government officials, joined Zimbabweans in the celebrations.
