TWO bodies have been retrieved following a mine shaft collapse at G-Zone Mining and Milling Company at the defunct Elvington Mine in Chegutu, where at least nine artisanal miners were trapped on Friday night.

The deceased were taken to Chegutu District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while injured survivors are receiving treatment at the same facility.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with approximately 40 people involved in the underground search effort.
At least two miners remain unaccounted for, amid fears they may have been trapped or crushed when the shaft caved in.

Chief Ngezi’s representative, Mr George Murungweni, visited the site Saturday afternoon and ordered the immediate suspension of all mining activities in the area until the rescue operation is complete.

Chegutu District Development Coordinator Mr Mark Kadaira confirmed the activation of the district’s Civil Protection Unit to coordinate the emergency response.
Authorities said efforts to account for all miners involved are continuing.
