NEW: Two children die, 14 others hospitalised in suspected food poisoning in Mashava

TWO children have died while 14 others, including seven adults and four children, are critically ill after a suspected case of food poisoning at a traditional beer ceremony in Mashava, Masvingo Province.

In a statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the incident occurred on Monday, when several families gathered for a traditional ritual ceremony.

“The families ate sadza and drank mahewu at the traditional ritual ceremony,” he said.

“Suddenly, the children and adults fell ill with stomach pains, resulting in the death of two minors aged three and seven years.”

According to police, four children and seven adults are currently admitted in critical condition at Masvingo General Hospital, while three others are receiving treatment at Mashava Clinic.

Authorities are investigating the source of the suspected poisoning.
