THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating the tragic death of a 13-year-old schoolgirl, Caroline Chari, who was mauled by three vicious dogs at St Mannocks Farm in Nyabira on Monday.
Caroline was walking home from school with four friends when the marauding dogs attacked.
The children ran in different directions, but the dogs pursued and fatally mauled her.
Police have since arrested the dogs’ owner, Gift Jambaya (50), who reportedly failed to ensure the animals were vaccinated and secured.
Investigations revealed the dogs were last vaccinated in 2024, and the owner had ignored the Department of Veterinary Services’ 2025 rabies vaccination outreach programme.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi expressed concern over increased cases of vicious dogs being left to roam freely without leashes or supervision.
“It is the responsibility of dog owners to protect the public and strictly comply with safety measures,” he said.
“The law will take its course on those who endanger lives through negligence.”
The police, working with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), local authorities and the Ministry of Health and Child Care have intensified operations to deal with stray dogs and impound dangerous animals kept in residential areas without
proper safeguards.
