NEW: Woman takes hubby to court for trying to force her to quit her job

A woman has taken her husband to court accusing him of verbally and physically abusing her for refusing to quit her job.

Chenai Hwarira appeared before the Harare Civil Court on Wednesday alleging that her husband Tendai Mavhiki frequently insulted and assaulted her, particularly when he is drunk.

“He becomes violent whenever he is drunk,” Hwarira told the court.

“Last week, he attacked me for coming home from work at 9pm, claiming it was too late.

“He also destroyed my kitchen utensils and accused me of engaging in prostitution at my salon. In the past, he even stopped me from working at a food restaurant.”

Mavhiki, however, denied the accusations, arguing that the real issue was his wife’s late working hours.

“The problem is that she comes home late at night, claiming she was at work,” he said.

“As a married woman, she has responsibilities at home.”

Presiding magistrate Ms Meenal Narotam ruled that Tendai Mavhiki must not insult, assault or damage his wife’s property.
