THE number of females with disabilities is higher compared to their male counterparts, with illness and old age among the causes, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) has said.

According to the 2022 Population and Housing Census Preliminary Report on Functioning, released on Tuesday, Zimstat says disability prevalence is also higher in rural areas.

“The prevalence ranged from 5,2 percent in Harare to 11,4 percent in Matabeleland North.

“The proportion of the population with varying degrees of difficulty in performing activities in rural areas (74 percent) was higher than in urban areas (26 percent).

“The proportion of females among persons with varying degrees of difficulty in performing activities was higher in both rural (12,8 percent versus 9,4 percent) and urban areas (6,9 percent versus 5,3 percent)

“Illness and ageing were the largest underlying causes of functional difficulty in both seeing and hearing, jointly accounting for over 58 percent in each of the domains.”
