Today, the global community observes World Kidney Day, emphasising the critical importance of kidney health under the theme “Are Your Kidneys OK?”.
This initiative aims to raise awareness about kidney disease, which has become a significant health concern, particularly due to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.
Dr Travolta Mushayamano, Head of Clinical Services at Cimas Health Group pointed out that lifestyle changes are major contributors to kidney disease.
“There has been an increase in the number of people with kidney disease, and part of it is the change in our diet and lifestyle. We know that obesity is a significant factor,” Dr Mushayamano stated.
He urged the public to prioritize early diagnosis and treatment, emphasizing that managing weight and chronic conditions can substantially reduce risks.
“Diabetes and hypertension also cause a lot of kidney damage, so as these conditions become more prevalent, kidney disease is expected to rise. We encourage people to modify their lifestyle, manage their weight, and address hypertension and diabetes, as these changes can make a difference,” he said.
In response to the growing burden of kidney disease, the Government provides free dialysis services in all public hospitals, while private healthcare providers offer specialized treatment options for those with medical aid.
