NEW: ZC show faith in Utseya

Online Reporter

DESPITE his team finishing 12th at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 World Cup, Prosper Utseya’s coaching pedigree has been rewarded with an extended tenure at the helm of the youth side.

Utseya was on Tuesday retained as head coach of the Under-19 national team, following a host of appointments made by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC).

The former Zimbabwe international, together with national team coach, Lalchand Rajput were given a vote of confidence to continue with their roles.

There was no such joy though for Adam Chifo, who was replaced by Gary Brent as head coach of the Zimbabwe senior women’s national team.

Utseya was also named as one of the national team’s selectors, together with Elton Chigumbura and Gavin Ewing.

The appointments followed a virtual meeting on Monday by the ZC, which also resulted in Craig Ervine being named as Zimbabwe’s substantive captain for the One Day International and Twenty20 international cricket.

He has been entrusted with the full-time responsibility after he led the national team for the limited-overs tours to Ireland, Scotland and Sri Lanka as interim skipper.

Sean Williams was retained as Zimbabwe’s Test captain.

Mary-Anne Musonda and Josephine Nkomo will also continue as captain and vice-captain of the Zimbabwe senior women’s national team, respectively.
