NEW: Zim commemorates World Suicide Prevention Day

Online Reporter

THE Zimbabwe National Association for Mental Health (ZIMNAMH) today planted trees as Zimbabwe joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Suicide Prevention Day.

The trees were planted at Tirivanhu Rehabilitation Centre in Ruwa as a way of remembering people who committed suicide.

ZIMNAMH programmes manager Mr Timothy Sithole said the trees were also planted as a symbol of instilling hope to those that survived suicide attempts.

“Trees are symbols of life and the way that we take care of trees should be the same way that we should care about people who are grappling with suicidal thoughts,” Mr Sithole said.

This year’s theme is ‘Take Action’.

The theme encourages communities to be proactive and help those that will be talking about taking their lives or those that will be showing suicidal tendencies.

Online sources indicate that globally, a person either commits suicide or attempts to do so after every 40 seconds.
