ZIMBABWE currently has enough wheat in stock to last the next four months, with millers expected to import 9 000 tonnes of the cereal monthly to ensure the country’s monthly requirements are met.
Addressing a post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, ICT, Postal and Courier Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere, who was standing in for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, said as at June 3, 2022 the wheat stocks in the country stood at 101 182 tonnes.
“Millers are expected to import 9 000 MT per month to meet the country’s monthly requirement of 30 000 MT per month,” he said.
Dr Muswere said this winter wheat production season Zimbabwe is targeting to produce 383 000 tonnes, which will be a record for the country.
“Despite challenges with the late start of the winter season, planting to date is 62,8 percent of the target, being above last year by 70 percent. The bulk of the planted wheat is at hardening stage,” he said.
